“ As black people, we have one view of ourselves versus understanding and working with how the world views us. Wilson adds. “ This collection is a showcase to represent ourselves without a need for approval,” she said in an interview with the Black in Fashion Council.
New Jersey native and CEO of ‘Marrisa Wilson Ny,’ Marrisa Wilson, has brought light to an often overlooked topic: Being black and female in America.
Wilson takes the innovative direction of representing the black community as an area of conversation most needed because there is an underrepresentation of the black experience. Namely, the world of social reform and justice, and within the exclusive area of fashion design.
Wilson’s ‘To be Black and Female’ NYFW Winter 21’ collection is inspired by the Harlem Renaissance and the social movements most notably outlined during the 1920s.
“ As black people, we have one view of ourselves versus understanding and working with how the world views us. Wilson adds. “ This collection is a showcase to represent ourselves without a need for approval,” she said in an interview with the Black in Fashion Council.
Wilson’s ‘Renaissance’ inspired collection highlights a vital concept of movement represented during the Twenties through art, social reform, and innovation. The garments showcased in her NYFW collection are made for wearability and comfort, without sacrificing taste and a sense of style.
The Guyanese-American designer established her eponymous brand back in 2016. Her passion for soul and multicultural concepts stemmed from her view of the world through the history, beauty, and evolution of the black experience, a view as timeless as it is contemporary.
